Weekend Roundup 20/21 May
Preston Cricket Club First X1 showcased their dominance as they secured a commanding 95-run win over Hoddesdon in a thrilling encounter. Opting to bat first after losing the toss, Preston’s batsmen came out with a fiery determination, leaving Hoddesdon struggling to contain the onslaught.
Openers James Stevens and Ed Wharton set the tone with a blistering start during the power play, propelling Preston to an impressive 73/0 in the first 10 overs. Stevens contributed a solid 41 before departing, but the momentum continued as Phil Simpson took charge, playing exquisite shots on his way to a brilliant run-a-ball 62. Simpson and Wharton formed a formidable partnership, accumulating a remarkable 151 runs before Wharton fell for a classy 127. Daniel Scholz (42*) arrived and added crucial runs, allowing Preston to set a daunting target of 317 for victory.
In response, Preston’s bowlers were relentless from the outset. Casey Walker (1/31) and Ed Wharton (2/21) struck early blows, reducing Hoddesdon to a disheartening 3/2 within the first six overs. The dream of a remarkable run chase quickly faded away. Hoddesdon skipper Rob Walters fought valiantly, showcasing his skills with an impressive knock of 73. However, Preston’s exceptional bowling and fielding kept the pressure on throughout the innings. Max Anderson stood out with superb figures of 2/24. Eventually, Hoddesdon crumbled under the mounting pressure, getting bowled out for 220.
Preston now sets their sights on an upcoming clash against league favorites Shenley.
Meanwhile, Preston’s 2nd team engaged in an enthralling contest against Clifton in Division 5. Opting to bat first, Preston posted a challenging total of 198/3 in their allotted 50 overs. Chris Cole emerged as the top scorer with an aggressive 74, receiving valuable support from Hearne (34) and Ollie Catlin (30).
In response, Clifton’s mainstay, Jack Brown, led a spirited run chase after early setbacks. Brown anchored the innings with resilience, contributing a crucial 74 runs before falling to Jacob Williamson’s delivery. Bridger provided some momentum with a steady 36, but Preston’s relentless pressure resulted in his dismissal. Despite Brown’s determined efforts, the remaining Clifton batsmen struggled to make an impact.
In a tense climax, Brown’s composed approach guided Clifton to a hard-fought victory. They reached the target of 201 for 9 with a couple of balls to spare, sealing a thrilling win.
Preston 3rd & 4th got things back on track with both sides recording victories.
Preston’s 4th XI comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Datchworth III at Wallace’s Meadow marked a resounding comeback from last week’s defeat. Electing to field first, Preston’s opening bowler Iain Purton wreaked havoc with a remarkable spell of 4-8, dismantling Datchworth’s top order. Supported by Riant (2-15), Ashby (2-14), and Phillips (2-6), Preston skittled out Datchworth for a paltry 70.
Chasing a modest target, Preston’s openers Tennant (34*) and Williamson (25*) cruised to victory without losing a single wicket, achieving the required total in just 20 overs.
Sunday saw a break from regular cricketing activities and after a brilliant junior session we welcomed club member Bhavin Patel, along with his extended family and many friends, to enjoy a celebration and IPL style cricket tournament. It was a pleasure to host and great fun had by all – amazing food too!
