Chris Newell

It was with great sadness that the club learned last week of the passing of one of the outstanding members in our history, Chris Newell.

He will be greatly missed and remembered as a real enthusiast for the game, combining 100% effort on the field with an enduring appetite for a smile with teammates and opponents alike.

His playing career from 1960s to 2020s is notable for it’s longevity, playing well into his seventies, but also for it’s quality – he may well be the club’s leading all-time run-scorer (pre-PlayCricket leather ledgers currently being consulted), was an exceptional fielder in his pomp and turned his hand both to keeping wicket and bowling as his team required in his much-admired twilight years.

A one-off character, great player and friend to club members, we will remember him at this weekend’s fixtures and convey deepest sympathy to his family.
